Suzie Attiwill

Dr Suzie Attiwill’s research practice poses questions of interior and interiority in relation to contemporary conditions of living, inhabitation, subjectivity, learning and creative practice. The research is conducted through a practice of designing with a curatorial emphasis that focuses on spatial, temporal and material relations. Current on-going projects include: urban + interior – a collaborative publication project bringing together an editorial team situated in Milan, Madrid and Melbourne to foster an international research network addressing the proposition urban + interior; Beyond Building with Gregory Nicolau (Australian Childhood Trauma Group) focuses on the situation of residential care homes for young people who have been placed in government care as a result of family abuse and/or neglect; various projects situated within institutions of learning, involving curatorial experiments in ecologies of learning – physical, social and mental.

Suzie is an associate professor of Interior Design and Deputy Dean of Learning & Teaching, RMIT School of Architecture and Design. From 2005 to 2012, she was program director, Interior Design. Suzie is a member of The Affective Environments Laboratory – http://aelab.org/ Her freelance practice, since 1991, involves exhibition design, curatorial work and writing on interdisciplinary projects in Australia and overseas. Other activities include: artistic director of Craft Victoria (1996-99) and editor of Craft and guest editor, Craft and Design Enquiry; board member/chair of West Space Artist Led Initiative (2006-10); chair of IDEA (Interior Design/Interior Architecture Educators Association, 2006-12) and executive editor of the IDEA Journal (2014-15).
