Volume 14 | Experience·Materiality·Articulation.

The selection process of papers from the Experience·Materiality·Articulation conference is already underway. The submission process is closed.

Studies in Material Thinking (SMT) is calling for submissions to a special volume of research articles to be published in early 2016, in collaboration with The Art of Research V, an initiative of the EMPIRICA Research Group at Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture (see conference site here: http://designresearch.aalto.fi/events/aor2014/)

Over the past two decades, a continuous dialogue and fruitful convergence has been taking place in academia between art and design related practices and the practice of research. This volume will focus on the interactive and dynamic relationship between experience, materiality and articulation. It aims to contribute to the discourse on material thinking through shared understanding of the ontological, epistemological and methodological issues of artistic and design research.

This special volume invites submissions on all forms of artistic and design research practice that contribute meaningfully to our understanding of how these different fields are shaping the future of research. We are interested in all the unique ways that artists and designers realize their objectives through their various methods, tools, and skills. SMT 16 offers an opportunity and an academic framework for discussing the significance of experience, materiality and articulation to research practice.

• How is experience articulated through artifacts and their making?
• How does awareness of environments, discourses and cultures affect practice?
• How does material agency and affordance affect the making of an artifact?
• What stories underpin artifacts and how do narratives support creative activities?
• What is the role of the body in research through practice?
• How does an exploratory approach towards creative processes and materials contribute to the production of new knowledge?

SMT 11 is open to innovative format options. We would like to encourage contributions that explore experimental, innovative ways of communicating the value and significance of speculative, pedagogical or applied design thinking. In particular we welcome film/video documentation of processes and image cycles used in a positive, active, discursive manner. We would like to produce a post-conference on-line volume that values and supports design educators, designers and researchers to explore a strongly visual form of argumentation.

Submission Process:
• Conference dates: 26-27 November 2014
• Invitation to submit for SMT 16: January/February 2015. Volume Editors for SMT 16 will invite authors to submit revised drafts of their conference presentations with visual and graphic material included.
• Revised paper deadline: 30th July 2015
• Peer review and preparation of final drafts: September 2015 - November 2015
• Copy-editing and final formatting: December - January 2016
• Expected publication date: March/April 2016.
