Re/materialising Design Education Futures

Studies in Material Thinking (SMT) in collaboration with DRS // CUMULUS, The 2nd International Conference for Design Education Researchers, Oslo 2013, is calling for submissions to a special volume of research articles that will be published in March 2014.

This volume will focus on ideas and concepts that articulate key contemporary concerns about the future relevance of design education practices and design education research. Contributors are invited to develop their 2013 DRS/Cumulus submissions (research and/or praxis papers) to take account of the material thinking implications inherent in their original submissions. The volume hopes to highlight philosophical and material/contextual changes taking place in relation to the articulation of material thinking concerns in design higher education.

Designed systems, artefacts and solutions including those of a pedagogical nature will influence the professional values, capability and philosophical orientations of future generations of designers who will make many of the choices that influence our future visual and material culture. To realize sustainability and to meet the complexity of global challenges in the future, design education today is in the process of inventing new learning and teaching goals. This collection of papers reveals some key issues that generate contemporary challenges in university design education.

SMT 11 is open to innovative format options. We would like to encourage contributions that explore experimental, innovative ways of communicating the value and significance of speculative, pedagogical or applied design thinking. In particular we would welcome film/video documentation of processes and image cycles used in a positive, active, discursive manner. We would like to produce a post-conference on-line volume that values and supports design educators, designers and researchers to explore a strongly visual form of argumentation.
